PM_Season start at Emilianusstollen in Wallerfangen-St. Barbara: First tours in June and July
For the first time this year, the gate to the Emilianus Mine in the Wallerfangen district of St. Barbara will open again for visitors on Saturday, June 13, 2026, at 3 p.m. Tour guide Gerlies Matheis will take participants on a journey into the past of this unique mining relic from Roman times. Another tour will be offered on Saturday, July 18, 2026, also at 3 p.m. Then Gilbert Jaeck will share fascinating stories about the ancient mine. Prior registration is required.
Built by the Romans in the first centuries after Christ, the Emilianus Mine is an early testimony to mining in the Saar region. Azurite, also known as "Bergblau," was mined here, from which a sought-after blue dye was produced. The focus of the tour is the approximately 20-meter-long, walkable part of the mine tunnel and its unique inscription.
Registrations are accepted at the Saarlouis Tourist Information under Tel. 06831-444 449. The participation fee is 4 euros per person and is paid on site. Sturdy footwear and suitable clothing are recommended. Children must bring a bicycle helmet. Group tours can be booked on request.
The meeting point and start of the tour is at the signposted parking lot at the St. Barbara community center, which is located a few meters from the street-side entrance to the tunnel.
