Minister Berg and traffic education
On the one hand, Economics Minister Barke (SPD) is fighting to preserve the automotive industry in Saarland; on the other hand, his cabinet colleague Petra Berg, also SPD, continues her cultural struggle against the car resolutely as Minister of Transport and Environment.
Now state employees are to be forced to switch to bicycles and public transport for climate protection reasons. Among other things, the ministry proposes to increase the cost of parking space around state authorities. After all, state-owned properties are well connected to public transport…
"It's actually real-life satire what regularly comes out of Mrs. Berg's ministry," states Angelika Hießerich-Peter, state chairwoman of the FDP Saar. "Instead of addressing the investment backlog in the road network, chaotic construction site planning, and fundamental deficits in rail connections, the ministry only produces pipe dreams. Maybe they soon want to turn the soon-to-be-empty parking lots into bicycle training grounds?!" The disastrous public transport in rural areas doesn't even need to be mentioned anymore.
It should also be noted that the ministry's climate protection project is inspired by George Orwell: "All animals are equal, but some are more equal than others!" In the future, civil servants in the state will be prohibited from flying on trips shorter than 800 km – with the exception of ministers, state secretaries, and their staff!
Once again, we are witnessing that the SPD wants to educate responsible citizens. As the FDP, we trust the state employees to be capable of choosing the appropriate form of mobility. Angelika Hießerich-Peter makes it clear: "It is the Minister's task in matters of traffic to ensure a solid mobility offer. Missionary traffic education does not fulfill this requirement!"
