City of St. Ingbert re-tenders Kahlenberghütte
The city of St. Ingbert is looking for a new tenant for the Kahlenberghütte in St. Ingbert-Rohrbach. Interested parties are sought who can present a viable and future-oriented concept for the further development of this traditional site.
The Kahlenberg Hut was built in 1956 by the Palatinate Forest Club Rohrbach and developed over many decades into a popular destination for hikers, cyclists, and walkers. Through various expansions – including the terrace area and ancillary rooms – the hut was continuously extended and adapted to the needs of its guests.
After the dissolution of the Palatinate Forest Association in 2023, the hut became the property of the city of St. Ingbert. Since then, the city administration has been working on a sustainable perspective for future use. Currently, the building requires significant renovation, particularly in terms of technical equipment and structural substance.
The re-tendering takes place against the background that a previously reviewed development project will not be pursued further. Mayor Dr. Ulli Meyer, local head Martin Biedermann, and the "Place to be" group, who wanted to develop the Kahlenberghütte, share in a joint statement:
“After intensive examination, the project developer has decided not to pursue the project to expand the Kahlenberghütte as an event and excursion venue. The detailed investigations have shown that the existing infrastructure is not sufficient for such use. For the planned new construction, conversion, and expansion, new drinking water and wastewater pipes as well as a new road access would have to be built. The associated high costs in the multi-million range are not economically justifiable. The city administration will publicly re-advertise the lease of the hut.”
With the tender, the city of St. Ingbert is deliberately opening up new perspectives: Creative and viable usage concepts are sought that can include both gastronomic offerings as well as community-oriented or touristic approaches and contribute to the sustainable revitalization of the location.
Interested parties can submit their usage concept by May 20, 2026, via email to gebaeudemanagement@st-ingbert.de. For questions, Mr. Neu is available at the phone number 06894 13 780.
