Dedicated helpers from the Saarlouis Job Center and the city of Saarlouis made the afternoon a truly special experience. In a cozy atmosphere, there was much to discover: In addition to supervised creative activities for the little ones, a photographer and Christmas-decorated food stalls were present, as well as the mobile family center of the Saarlouis district, which introduced the Family Guide and the family offers listed therein. Guests could also purchase carved, cast, and chiseled decorative and utilitarian items from the Saarlouis Youth Workshop and the creative workshop of the Association for Social Psychiatry.
Throughout the day, around 110 families with over 320 people participated in the event at the Saarlouis community center. At the end, each household received a Bärenhunger Christmas cooking box, which contained fresh fruit, vegetables, and other cooking and baking ingredients, along with the appropriate recipes for an entire menu. The Saarlouis district received support for stocking the packages from Globus Markthalle Saarlouis and the company Fackelmann: The consumer market donated the cardboard boxes, and the household goods manufacturer gave each family a julienne peeler.
The idea for the Bärenhunger family cooking boxes originated in the Saarlouis district during the COVID-19 pandemic: Due to the closure of schools and daycare centers, families entitled to financial support for lunches in these institutions lacked an adequate replacement. The Saarlouis district addressed this need with the Bärenhunger family cooking box. The concept was so well received that it continued after the resumption of school operations and was made permanent by the district council.
