It was an evening that celebrated the life and tireless commitment of Esther Bejarano. "It is important to me to continue the work of remembrance in Saarlouis, to honor the life's work and ideals of Esther Bejarano," explained Mayor Marc Speicher on the occasion of the memorial service at the Protestant Church Saarlouis. "Saarlouis stands firmly against anti-Semitism; the fight against anti-Semitism is our duty, whether it comes from the right or the left, or is imported anti-Semitism."
“Throughout her life, Esther Bejarano advocated for freedom, for humanity, for values that are so important to us,” emphasized Ricarda Kunger, chairwoman of the Saar Synagogue Community. “Her goal was to keep the memory alive and to fight the dangers of forgetting.” Even today, synagogues are being attacked again, and people wearing kippahs and the Star of David often no longer dare to walk the streets. “It is up to us as a society to stand together and decide to fight against such developments.” Mayor Speicher agreed with this: “I invite everyone to continue the fight against extremism. That requires courage! But none of us should tolerate the existence of extremism in our society.”
