In December 2023, the state government presented its current public transport development plan and announced the introduction of a Saarland S-Bahn in the densely populated area between the major cities of Homburg, Neunkirchen, Saarbrücken, and Saarlouis, which will now be gradually implemented by December 2026. A nearly 20-minute interval is also planned at the train stations Dillingen, Merzig, Ottweiler, and St. Wendel.
"In Saarland, we remain committed to the goal of the mobility transition. The prerequisite for more and more people to choose public transport in their daily lives is a network of lines that ensures good accessibility to the destination in a reasonable time and without extensive planning effort," says Mobility Minister Petra Berg. "This is now the first step to further expand public transport throughout Saarland and to develop the mobility of the future. The railway, in particular, plays an outstanding role in this."
