Out of 71 submitted entries, the jury shortlisted 15 projects. Among these, in addition to three awards, six projects received a recognition, including the expansion of the Steinrausch primary school, where the jury especially praised the exemplary spatial concept and appropriate scale: “The new building impresses with its spatial concept: two clusters, each with two classrooms, share group and differentiation rooms. Two light courts provide additional illumination for the room network. The omission of corridor areas makes the spatial concept feel like a living landscape, offering a spatiality appropriate for a primary school. The Steinrausch Primary School expansion project convinces with its successful spatial concept and was therefore rightfully recognized,” said the presenter Tobias Schneberger, chairman of the BDA RLP.
The Association of German Architects (BDA) in the states of Rhineland-Palatinate and Saarland honors completed buildings from the years 2017-2024 that are exemplary in strengthening the quality of planning and building with responsibility towards society and the environment. The awards aim to contribute to raising public awareness of the quality of planning and building in Rhineland-Palatinate and Saarland and to convey the importance of good architecture to the public. The BDA Architecture Award thus serves to promote building culture in Rhineland-Palatinate as well as in Saarland and sets quality standards in contemporary architecture. The award is presented under the dual patronage of the Minister of Finance in Rhineland-Palatinate, Doris Ahnen, and the Minister of the Interior, Building and Sports of Saarland, Reinhold Jost, equally to the client and the architect for their joint work.
Mayor Carsten Quirin and Head of Department Alexander Guß accepted the recognition on behalf of the district town of Saarlouis as the client, in the presence of the responsible architect Max Munkel from ABMP Architecture in Freiburg. "We are very pleased that the innovative spatial concept has been so well received by the school community and that the courage of the client is now being honored with a recognition award at the BDA Architecture Prize," said architect Max Munkel.
Mayor Carsten Quirin especially thanks his team in the town hall administration and the decision-makers in the city council: “This prestigious recognition encourages us to continue to take the right path in our educational landscape, both architecturally and functionally. The fact that the expansion of the Steinrausch elementary school is also the only awarded project in Saarland during this long period makes us particularly proud as a city.”
