“Five years ago, the whole world was holding its breath with Paris over this precious landmark. We also felt the pain of having to witness the destruction of a gem of European culture. Today is a historic celebration day for the French nation. The resurrection of Notre-Dame is also a heartwarming example of Franco-German friendship, as many in Germany contributed,” said Rehlinger. “It is a French miracle with German support.”
During a major fire on April 15 and 16, 2019, parts of the Notre-Dame de Paris Cathedral were destroyed. After only five years of restoration, the historic building is now being reopened to the public. A special feature: Four of the windows damaged in the fire were restored at the glass restoration workshop of the Cologne Cathedral Workshop. The grand reopening begins with a speech by French President Emmanuel Macron. Among the invited guests are Anke Rehlinger, Federal President Steinmeier, as well as heads of state and government from around the world. The first mass in the cathedral will take place on December 8, 2024. From December 16, the church doors will be open to all visitors again.
