Mayor Marcus Hoffeld is enthusiastic and very pleased with the result. "The furniture in the Steine area near the border has become outdated. A replacement or renewal of the benches at this touristically very popular location was absolutely necessary and required this 'visual refresh.' In addition to the Rad-Info-Point station at Saarwiesenring, we have once again succeeded in improving the quality of the tourist offerings in the Merzig city area with the implementation of this project," said Mayor Hoffeld.
Tourism expert Christopher Klein is also pleased with the result and has words of praise: "The trail maintainers have once again implemented this measure excellently and perfectly. I would also like to thank the municipal works department at this point for their energetic support. Visitors, whether cyclists, hikers, or culture enthusiasts, will appreciate this work," Klein continued.
The symposium "Stones at the Border" stretches across the heights of the Saargau along a border path between France and Germany. It traces back to the Saarland sculptor Paul Schneider. He initiated the symposium in 1985 and invited renowned artists from various countries over several years. In total, 36 large stone sculptures were created. The artists crafted their sculptures on-site in an "open studio" with active participation from the local population. The powerful stone sculptures are monuments and memorials of peace. Every year, thousands of visitors come because of them to the wide and open landscape of the Saargau, with a magnificent view into the Lorraine region and the Saar valley.
This measure was implemented, among other things, thanks to a financial grant from SAARLAND SPORT-TOTO GmbH. The goal of this project was to enhance and make the area along the international sculptors' symposium more attractive. The district town of Merzig has succeeded in doing so.
