The GospelChor Saarbrücken was founded in 1986 by the then Saarbrücken student chaplain Dr. Wilhelm Otto Deutsch, who led it for many years. Dr. Deutsch had worked for several years as a university lecturer in Swaziland, a neighboring state of South Africa, and brought back a collection of songs from there that had been virtually unknown in Germany until then. These songs from southern Africa – shaped by the experience of oppression and resistance under the apartheid system, but also by the hope for liberation and justice – form the core of the choir's repertoire with their great emotional and spiritual power. In addition, there are spirituals from the USA, whose origins are similarly rooted in the experience of slavery and the longing for liberation.
