Military Legacy Contaminations

Von Redaktion Landkreis Saarlouis | 27.11.2024 11:54 | Lesedauer: 1 minute

During investigations ahead of sewer renovation work at the Graf-Haeseler Barracks in Lebach, strong indications emerged of an additional unexploded World War II bomb buried underground. If confirmed, specialists from the state police headquarters will need to defuse and dispose of it.

The date for the defusing has been set for Sunday, January 19, 2025. Based on the presumed location of the bomb, an evacuation radius of 300 or 500 meters is expected. The final determination of the evacuation radius will be made by the bomb disposal unit after the device has been uncovered and closely examined.

It was only on Pentecost Sunday, May 19, 2024, that the bomb disposal unit successfully defused so-called "duds" from the Second World War on the barracks grounds.

On the city's website, answers to the most important questions are summarized at https://www.lebach.de/buergerservice/faq-bombenentschaerfung-1. The population is also kept informed about all the latest news there.

The residents directly affected by the restricted zone and evacuation will be informed through resident notifications.

In addition, it is possible to clarify open questions via the specially set up citizen hotline for this purpose. The employees of the local police authority can be reached during the regular opening hours of the citizen's office (Monday to Friday 8 a.m. to 12 p.m., Tuesday additionally 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., and Thursday continuously from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.) at (06881) 59-123. On Saturday, January 18, the citizen hotline is staffed from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., and on the day of the evacuation and defusal (Sunday, January 19) from 7 a.m.
