Domestic violence against women is the focus of UN Women Germany’s “Orange the World” 2024 campaign this year. The CDU Women’s Union has for years been highlighting the issue and demanding concrete measures against violence towards women. We have successfully called for the criminal statistical recording of crimes against gender.
A draft law for better protection against violence is long overdue. Despite numerous announcements by the Federal Minister for Family Affairs, the German Bundestag has yet to receive a corresponding law. Too late for the 256,276 people who were victims of domestic violence last year!
“Women need a safe refuge from violence,” emphasizes the chairwoman of the CDU Saar Women’s Union. “We want a needs-based expansion and adequate financial support for the work of women’s shelters, as well as a legal entitlement to protection and professional counseling for those affected by domestic violence!”
Furthermore, the CDU Women’s Union calls for a tightening of the penalty framework and effective measures to ensure compliance with conditions and prevent repeat offenses, e.g., electronic ankle bracelets to enforce restraining orders.
Background:
Since 1991, the UN campaign “Orange the World” has raised awareness of violence against women and girls: from the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women on November 25 until December 10, Human Rights Day.
