The centerpiece of the event is the over 200 square meter ice skating rink in the heart of Völklingen's city center. Here, visitors can skate their laps in a festive Christmas atmosphere. For refreshment, mulled wine and other typical winter treats are provided to complement the offerings. New this year are an additional snack stand offering savory specialties and a confectionery stand.
The special feature of the ice skating rink: It is climate-friendly and requires no electricity, water, or cooling system – a plus for the environment!
The Völklinger Winterwelt is an event organized by the Gesellschaft für Wirtschaftsförderung, Innovation und Stadtmarketing (GWIS) Völklingen mbH.
“With the Völklinger Winter World, we have created a completely new event format that deliberately sets itself apart from a traditional Christmas market. It is a meeting place for all generations, with ice skating and a wintery range of food and drinks. Our goal is to continuously expand this event,” said Lars Hüsslein, managing director of GWIS.
Thanks to the ice skate rental, even beginners and newcomers can take their first steps on the ice. Especially families will thus have the opportunity to spend an entertaining time together.
Kindergartens and school classes are also warmly invited to use the ice rink in the mornings for sports activities. On weekdays between 10 a.m. and 12 p.m., the rink is exclusively available to these groups. Timely reservations are required, which can be made online at www.voelklinger-winterwelt.de.
On the weekends, atmospheric live music provides the perfect wintery ambiance, further enlivening the meeting point at the ice rink. Especially on the opening day, December 7, 2024, it will be festive: St. Nicholas has announced his visit for the afternoon and will delight the youngest visitors with small surprises.
“The successful premiere last year showed that our citizens greatly appreciate a winter event in the city center. With the Völklingen Winter World, we are not only creating a new attraction but also strengthening trade and gastronomy in our city,” says Mayor Stephan Tautz with pleasure.
