Robert's father decides to follow his French superior to a zinc mine in Algeria. There, he thinks he "can still become something." Soon, the family sets off in their fully loaded Peugeot for the Moroccan border town of Bou Beker. Here, French, Spanish, Canadian, and German people live together in specially built bungalows, forming an unusual community with the locals living in the nearby Medina.
