Merzig Christmas Market at the Town Hall
On Thursday, November 28th, the pre-Christmas season begins in Merzig, as on this day the "Merzig Christmas Market at the Town Hall" officially opens its doors again. Until December 24th, the operators Mike Puhlmann and Stefan Spangenberger, in cooperation with the district town of Merzig, offer a festive program, culinary specialties, and an attractive supporting program.
Mayor Marcus Hoffeld will open the market on November 28 at 6 p.m. with the support of the Christkind in the courtyard of Merzig Town Hall.
New and unique in Saarland is a reindeer sleigh, with which visitors can experience a ride through the city center. On the first Advent weekend, when the Nikolaus market takes place at Kirchplatz, the sleigh acts as a Christmas shuttle service. On the 3rd Advent weekend (December 14th/15th), sing-along concerts are also held on the sleigh. On board are the musicians Eva Joris and Jan Lindemann, who delight passengers with Christmas songs. Together with all travelers, a very special Christmas choir is created that resonates through Merzig. The stop for the reindeer sleigh is located in front of the Rote Zora bookstore. The reindeer sleigh runs Monday to Friday from 5 to 7 pm and on Saturday/Sunday from 3 to 7 pm. Departures take place approximately every 15 minutes. The price is €1 per ride.
In addition, the Christmas market features atmospheric performances by music clubs from the region. On weekends, bands create a pre-Christmas atmosphere. The market ends with the now traditional "Christmas Morning Party" on December 24th, with a sparkling wine bar benefiting "Christmas Eve alone – that doesn't have to be" organized by the evangelical church community of Merzig.
The little guests are not forgotten either. This year, there are daily performances of the puppet theater (Mon-Fri 4 p.m., Sat+Sun 4 and 5 p.m.). The popular children's winter events take place on all four Advent Saturdays on the Christmas market stage at 3 p.m. each day.
Interested parties can also rent a log cabin again – for a cozy evening with friends and family, but also for a Christmas party with colleagues. Reservations are already possible via the website www.merziger-weihnachtsmarkt.de.
Merzig Nikolaus Market with Sunday Shopping
The traditional "Merzig Nikolausmarkt" takes place on the first Advent weekend, Saturday, November 30, and Sunday, December 1, around the parish church of St. Peter. The market offers a variety of handcrafted products as well as classic Christmas decorations and is complemented by a colorful program for the little guests. Christmas music contributions ensure a festive market visit.
On Saturday (11/30) at 5 p.m., the market will be officially opened by Mayor Hoffeld, and St. Nicholas will also be a guest, bringing a small surprise for the children once again!
On Sunday, December 1st, many shops in downtown Merzig will be open from 1 pm to 6 pm as part of the "open Sunday" event. In addition, the Christmas raffle organized by the Association for Trade and Commerce with many attractive prizes will start on this day.
Action "Living Advent Calendar"
The Family Alliance Merzig e.V. wants to bring people together and get them into the Christmas spirit with the Living Advent Calendar. From December 1st to 24th, a window in the "Living Advent Calendar Merzig" opens every day at 5 p.m. For 20 - 30 minutes, there will be something special to see, taste, hear, or craft. All event locations can be viewed at www.merzig.de
Children's and Cultural Program
The district town of Merzig, in cooperation with the district cultural center Villa Fuchs, also presents many cultural highlights during the pre-Christmas season.
The event kicks off on November 29th with a concert by Elisa Rehlinger under the motto "Of Polaroids and Postcards." A children's cinema day is also included again at the Merzig Town Hall, featuring two films: Garfield (at 2:30 PM for children aged 0 and up) and Chantal in Fairyland (at 5:30 PM for children aged 12 and up) on December 4th.
On December 10th, the “Sibio Ballet Theatres” will perform the ballet “Cinderella” at the Merzig Town Hall. With the “Christmas Magic,” a concert featuring 2-sam and Sascha Kleinophorst, Castle Fellenberg will also become a pre-Christmas event stage. “A Christmas Carol,” the Charles Dickens classic, has now become a tradition during the pre-Christmas season and will be shown on December 14th in the Town Hall. The New Year will finally be ushered in on January 5th with the New Year’s Concert of the Chamber Orchestra of the Greater Region. Further information and tickets for these and other events are available at the County Cultural Center Villa Fuchs, www.villa-fuchs.de.
In addition, there are many other wonderful offerings such as special Christmas concerts as well as very beautiful Christmas markets in the local districts.
The flyer "Merzig lights up" with an overview of all planned events during the Christmas season is available at the end of November in all municipal offices as well as many shops in Merzig!
