Almost one percent of the total area of Saarland consists of bodies of water; foremost among them is the eponymous lifeline Saar, with its great importance for the industrialization of the region as a transportation route for coal and steel. For the rope-towed shipping from Sarreguemines, the river lost its natural shape due to the necessary expansion. Up to the present time, ports and berths, locks and weirs have been constructed, and the river course has even been redirected. Transport shipping was able to reach via the confluence into
Moselle and Rhine and the canals, such as the Saar-Coal Canal, connected distant destinations between Paris and the North Sea throughout Europe. Nowadays, transport shipping has lost its importance; the Saar is primarily used by passenger shipping.
With the Blies, Prims, Rossel, and Nied, four major tributaries feed the Saar, many others run through the region, and Bostalsee, Losheim Reservoir, and the Nonnweiler Dam offer recreational activities for locals and tourists.
From this large repertoire of bodies of water and waterways, the members of the photography group have selected a diverse range of subjects, which should not necessarily be considered representative, but which aim to capture the character and uniqueness of the photographed locations.
The results of this photographic journey through the land and seasons are presented by the photo group of the Saarbrücken Academy for Seniors, the Regional Adult Education Center Saarbrücken, in the exhibition "Saarland Waters" from April 20, 2023, to June 9, 2023, at the Old Town Hall at Schlossplatz in Saarbrücken. Photographs by Joachim Gerstner, Thomas Hippchen, Gertrud Jakobs, Rainer Koch, Martin Krämer, Stefania Ledwig-Biehl, Karl-Günter Michel, Hans Peter Mürz, Ekkehard Paulus, Gerd Schäf, Manfred Scheffer, and Roman Wallrich are shown.
