As part of the celebrations in the fully packed Taubenfeldhalle, the Saarland Minister of Education Christine Streichert-Clivot and Mayor Lutz Maurer presented the certificate to the students. Among the numerous guests welcomed by headmistress Martina Thielmann in the lovingly decorated hall were Regional Association Director Peter Gillo, Wynnie Mbindyo from Fairtrade Germany, and the former mayor Karin Lawall.
Already in 2018, the first school projects dealing with the topic of Fairtrade (German: gerechter Handel) began. These were followed by ever new teaching content and interesting projects aimed at "educating and motivating students to be more careful and sustainable with our world," as the school states. In particular, the Fairtrade working group with the teachers Fabienne Schmid and Doris Groß was highly committed to ensuring that the school can now officially bear this title. This makes the comprehensive school one of more than 870 Fairtrade schools in Germany.
“Our actions affect the entire world. The award as a Fairtrade School is a symbol of solidarity and fairness. Here at GemS Quierschied, fair actions are taught and lived – in the classroom and beyond,” said Minister Streichert-Clivot before the official presentation of the certificate.
“As mayor, I can say: We as a municipality are very proud of what the community school in Quierschied achieves. The great commitment to the important issue of fair trade is not the only thing: Your school is also more engaged than others in the areas of sustainability and the exchange between young and old, and for that I would like to sincerely thank you, dear students, as well as Mrs. Thielmann and her colleagues,” said Mayor Maurer.
