The chairman of the City Sports Association in Saarlouis, Dieter Kirsch, welcomed the numerous athletes, families, friends, and supporters who had come on Friday evening in the festival hall of the Theater am Ring. He expressed his joy that after a challenging and very sobering time for sports in general, this year it was finally possible to hold an award ceremony in this setting again.
Mayor Peter Demmer echoed the words of the chairman of the City Association and placed special emphasis in his speech on the background work in the Saarlouis sports clubs: “Without this support and backing from the clubs, we would not be able to honor so many special achievements tonight,” said the mayor.
In the first awards block, the most successful participants from the disciplines of shooting sports, dance sports, canoe slalom, gymnastics, and dog sports were honored.
The second block then featured the awards for the sports of athletics, orienteering, triathlon, tennis, table tennis, and basketball.
On this evening, a total of 16 people were also awarded a certificate for repeatedly passing the sports badge. In addition to the certificate, the athletes were given a towel as a small gift from the city association this year.
Traditionally, there were special honors again this year at the sports party. Rebecca Korinth-Lay, Franz-Rudolf Gerath, and Gerd Riedel were recognized for their outstanding and far-reaching commitment to their clubs and sports.
Evelyn Schudell, Ricky Easterling and the 1st men's team of SC Roden are athletes of the year
Evelyn Schudell was named Athlete of the Year 2022. She is a member and trainer at the Saarlouis Dog Friends Club. In 2022, she became the state champion in the cross-country run over 2 km with her dog Jäck and achieved the highest scores at the state level in the disciplines of tetrathlon 3 and sprint tetrathlon with her female dog Rachel.
Basketball player Ricky Easterling from the Saarlouiser Sunkings was honored as Athlete of the Year 2022. He came to Saarlouis in 2008 and, with his consistent performance, has been the key factor in the continued success of the men's team of the Sunkings of DJK Saarlouis-Roden. In addition to promotion to the 2nd Bundesliga, the team has won the Saarland Cup every year since his arrival and has also established itself as a top team in a strong and increasingly professional regional league.
As the team of the year 2022, the 1st men's team of SC Roden was able to celebrate with those present. They recently achieved their second promotion in just four years. Since the 21/22 season, they have been playing in the Landesliga Südwest and are thus the highest-ranking football team in the city of Saarlouis.
Around the award blocks, SfS had put together a colorful program for the guests. Florian Maass from the Saarlouis Hornets brought some information about the sport of baseball. This was complemented by two performances by the artist duo ExtraArt from the Black Forest, which amazed and amused the audience. The guests were offered a varied program.
