Chemistry lab, mechatronics lab, workshop, and much more – fully and professionally equipped. Here, children and young people can experiment, research, and learn new things in almost all technical subjects in cooperation with schools or in courses. A great concept that the food company is happy to support with its newly established administration and logistics center in St. Ingbert.
“It is important to us to invest in education that is accessible to everyone,” said Managing Director Sven Gatz, explaining the company's donation of 4,000 euros to the SFTZ in St. Ingbert. The idea for this donation came from the outgoing Managing Director Wilfried Simon, who is in contact with Prof. Dr. Uwe Hartmann as the first chairman of the association MINT-Campus Alte Schmelz e.V. “We look forward to the possibility that perhaps our trainees may also come here one day to research food,” emphasized Lidl’s Head of Human Resources Christoph Kossbiel. Prof. Rolf Hempelmann, as SFTZ department head, is already prepared for this: “Starting in the summer, we will also offer courses on food chemistry,” he explained.
The current funding amount will be used by the SFTZ to finance its new PCR equipment (PCR = Polymerase Chain Reaction). This method is widely known due to Corona; it allows the highly sensitive detection of specific genetic material (DNA, RNA). In the future, students will be able to experimentally learn this important molecular biological procedure at the SFTZ, using tests on harmless biological material – of course, not on pathogenic viruses. "The consumables required for the PCR tests are very expensive. Therefore, we are happy to be able to procure them easily now," said Rolf Hempelmann.
Mayor Nadine Backes thanked the two Lidl representatives. “We are proud to have such an educational opportunity for children and young people here on the former industrial site at Alte Schmelz. By supporting young people, we are laying the foundations for all our futures and the future of the city,” she emphasized. With its large number of jobs, the Lidl logistics and administrative center also contributes to the development of St. Ingbert.
Lidl offers job vacancies and training positions in stores in Saarland and the adjacent Rhineland-Palatinate, as well as in the logistics and administrative center in St. Ingbert. For more information
