Together, the municipalities are welcoming athletes from Haiti as part of the "Host Town" program of the Special Olympics World Games. The Special Olympics World Games are taking place in Berlin in 2023 and are the largest inclusive sporting event in the world. People with and without disabilities, from various nations and cultures, come together and overcome prejudices through the power of sport. As a "Host Town" host, the tri-border region has the opportunity to implement inclusive projects and establish a sustainable network for people with intellectual disabilities. Even before the event, the host community wants to raise awareness about the Games and the topic of inclusion intensively. Against this background, a public event focusing on inclusion and sport will take place in Perl on Saturday, March 25, 2023.
How do we achieve more inclusion in clubs?
The event begins with an informational session for all interested parties at 2:30 PM in the DeutschLuxemburgischen Schengen-Lyzeum. This session will cover not only the basic aspects of the "Host Town" program and the Special Olympics but also inclusive sustainability and development for clubs. Only about 8% of people with intellectual disabilities are active in sports. To increase this percentage, the presentation by Nina Hagedorn (regional coordinator of the "Together Unbeatable" campaign) will address, among other things, the benefits and support options for sports clubs as well as best practice examples.
Sport unites
The highlight of the event is a charity basketball match between the mayors of the i³ municipalities and the basketball team of Special Olympics Luxembourg. The kickoff is at 4:30 PM in the sports hall of the German-Luxembourgish Schengen Lyceum. The DE-FR-LU host community looks forward to numerous guests and interested visitors and hopes to help people with intellectual disabilities become more visible in sports and society. And specifically where it matters: in their home region. Admission is free. Catering on site is provided by the Handball Club Perl.
