A 35-year-old woman residing in France was seriously injured on Monday evening in a traffic accident on the A 620 motorway near Saarlouis. The accident was caused by a wrong-way driver and occurred around 8:40 p.m. on the Luxembourg-bound carriageway near the Saarlouis-Mitte slip road. The police command and situation center received numerous emergency calls from road users who had seen the wrong-way driver, who was traveling in a red 6-series BMW between the Wallerfangen and Saarlouis-Mitte slip roads. The 35-year-old driver of a white Citroen was no longer able to avoid the wrong-way driver near the Saarlouis-Mitte slip road and collided head-on with the car of the 38-year-old perpetrator, who was slightly injured in the process.
At the accident site, emergency medical services, fire brigade, and police were deployed. During the accident investigation, it was found that the offender was under the influence of alcohol. His driver's license was therefore confiscated by the police. For the duration of the recovery operations and subsequent road cleaning, the A 620 towards Luxembourg had to be completely closed for approximately 4 hours. Other road users who were endangered by the wrong-way driver are requested to contact the Saarlouis Police Station by phone at 06831 9010 or by email at PI-Saarlouis@polizei.slpol.de.
