In 2019, she decided to pursue training for the higher service, which she completed with her diploma at the end of 2022. Now, she has been appointed as the "Municipal Women's Officer" by Mayor Dr. Ulli Meyer, succeeding Susanne Jung. Kathrin Hary discusses who she is and what tasks await her in the interview.
What is a municipal women's representative?
According to the Municipal Self-Government Act of Saarland (KSVG), every municipality with a population of 20,000 or more must appoint a municipal women's representative. She is a contact person and guide not only for the employees of the city administration but for all citizens of the city who have issues with equality.
Why is it not called Equal Rights Commissioner?
The wording is anchored in Saarland law. But of course, I am there for all people who need help. In any case, I apply common sense. Just as well, I will provide equal advice to women and men who have problems, refer them to contact points, accompany them, and so on.
Where do you see your responsibilities?
As mentioned, employees of the city administration as well as citizens – regardless of gender – can come to me if they have issues related to equality. This can include, for example, experiences of violence, observed misconduct, or other cases. I will listen to them, provide empathetic advice, support them, and help with problem-solving. In addition, I am planning several events together with my predecessor and current deputy Susanne Jung. Many things were left unresolved due to the coronavirus pandemic, but we would like to revive ideas such as the women's cinema, lectures (e.g., about parental leave, which is equally interesting for men), Girls Day, International Women's Day activities, and so on.
What are your personal interests?
I have been with the Bergkapelle for 23 years. As a child, I learned the recorder; afterwards, I actually wanted to learn the flute or clarinet, but ended up playing the trumpet. I really enjoy it very much. Meanwhile, I am the 2nd chairwoman of the club. As a club member, you learn to take responsibility, solve problems, and gain stability. But in the end, you simply share joy with others and create beautiful music.
The commitment of Kathrin Hary from Rohrbach and her identification with the city are also emphasized by Mayor Dr. Ulli Meyer during the presentation of the certificate: “You are fully engaged in life, socially committed, and handle matters with common sense and determination! Congratulations and good luck in your role as the municipal women's representative.” At the same time, he thanks Susanne Jung, who has held the office for 14 years and has served under three mayors: “Thank you very much! You have carried out the tasks with great dedication,” he praises with a wink.
Susanne Jung has taken over the management of the Citizen Service Center in addition to the management of the Registry Office and is therefore passing her office on to Kathrin Hary: "I have always enjoyed the work a lot, but now it is time for other tasks. Kathrin is truly predestined for this office and I look forward to our collaboration."
