On Wednesday, February 1, 2023, the municipality of Perl invites you to a public information event on the HyStarter project „Hydrogen Region Municipality of Perl“. The event will take place from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the German-Luxembourg Schengen Lyceum Perl and is aimed at companies and the interested public. In addition to basic information on the future topic of hydrogen and the HyStarter funding project, the first diverse project approaches from the ongoing HyStarter process will be presented. All interested parties have the opportunity to ask questions, discuss with the experts present, and network with the HyStarter actors on site. The experts for sustainable energy supply from the process-accompanying engineering firm EE Energie Engineers GmbH, Maximilian Winter (winter@energy-engineers.de) and Ilvy Havranek (havranek@energy-engineers.de), are happy to receive technical questions in advance.
Regarding the HyStarter project „Hydrogen Region Municipality of Perl“, Mayor Ralf Uhlenbruch explains: „The conditions for the holistic, regionally integrated development of hydrogen and fuel cell technology are promising in Perl. We already produce electricity from renewable energies in considerable amounts today and want to intensify this in the near future. Through the HyStarter project, we are analyzing the potentials of this future topic for Perl and the region with expert support. We are building a network of actors from different industries and interest groups and developing scenarios on how hydrogen can provide impulses for the economic development of our municipality. I am pleased that we will be able to present interim results to the public at the event on February 1st.“
Hydrogen is considered a key technology of the 21st century. In particular, green hydrogen, which is produced using renewable energy and thus without carbon dioxide emissions, plays a central role in a climate-neutral economy. What potentials does the use of hydrogen offer in the municipality of Perl and the region? How can this energy carrier be produced and transported? What quantities can be produced in the region, and how much will need to be imported in the future? How can a regional value chain be established? The HyStarter project addresses these questions and more.
As one of 15 HyStarter regions nationwide in the federal funding program "HyLand – Hydrogen Regions in Germany," the Saarland Obermosel municipality was selected in 2021 by the Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure. Since mid-2022, the municipality has been advancing the HyStarter process. The expert support associated with the successful participation in the federal competition "HyLand – Hydrogen Regions in Germany," the related networks, and the corresponding funding instruments represent a significant success factor for the project. A core team of about 20 local and regional stakeholders, together with consultants for sustainable energy supply and the project managers of the municipal administration, has already met several times for full-day strategy dialogues and is working on a professional concept for a green hydrogen economy in Perl and the region.
"Hydrogen as a climate-neutral energy carrier can not only be used in many ways but also be produced and distributed directly on-site from renewable energies. Therefore, the development of a regionally integrated concept for the introduction of hydrogen and fuel cell technology is a great opportunity for our tri-border region and the municipality of Perl. As a community, we can become enablers of a regional hydrogen economy. We want to explore this potential and make the best possible use of it," emphasizes Mayor Ralf Uhlenbruch.
Background Information:
"HyLand – Hydrogen Regions in Germany" is a competition launched in 2019 by the Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure (BMVI), currently in its second round (HyLand II). HyLand motivates stakeholders in all regions of Germany to initiate, plan, and implement hydrogen-related concepts. The aim of the competition is to identify and promote the most innovative and promising regional concepts. As part of HyLand II, a total of 30 winners in 2 different categories (HyStarter and HyExperts) have been announced by the Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure (BMVI).
The 15 winners in the HyStarter category:
City of Munich (Bavaria), City of Bendorf (Rhineland-Palatinate), Mecklenburg Lake District County (Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania), East Frisia (Lower Saxony), West Palatinate Region (Rhineland-Palatinate), Perl (Saarland), InterFranken Industrial/Commercial Area Association (Bavaria), Altenburger Land County (Thuringia), City of Bad Bentheim (Lower Saxony), Eichstätt County (Bavaria), Hanseatic City of Wismar (Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania), Soest District (North Rhine-Westphalia), Göppingen County (Baden-Württemberg), Kulmbach County (Bavaria), Rheinhessen-Nahe (Rhineland-Palatinate)
