It is located in a previously unused room on a building rooftop area on Rathausstraße, where numerous pigeons have already made their home. The property owner has kindly agreed to support the project.
The new pigeon house was created through civic engagement by the AG Lebenswertes Völklingen in cooperation with the city of Völklingen. It currently has 95 nesting places and is maintained and regularly cleaned by members of AG Lebenswertes Völklingen and other volunteers. The animals are attracted and fed with appropriate food, provided with water, and their eggs are replaced with dummy eggs to humanely regulate the pigeon population.
The pigeons have already nested within a short period of time. "We hope that through our commitment, we can make an important contribution to animal welfare and cleanliness in our city," said Alexander Benzmüller, spokesperson for the AG Livable Völklingen.
"A big thank you goes especially to the volunteers and members of the AG Lebenswertes Völklingen, who contribute greatly here," said Mayor Christof Sellen, who is also responsible for the local police authority and the Public Facilities Department within his area of the Völklingen city administration. "We would be pleased if more citizens got involved in the project and, for example, supported it sustainably with food donations," Sellen said during his visit to the pigeon house, where he was able to get an impression of the volunteer work of the AG.
The Völklinger Wirtschaftskreis e.V., represented by Hans Agostini, has now handed over an initial donation check. With a one-time donation of €500 for the purchase of feed, the association supports the working group's goal to regulate the pigeon population in the city center and thus ensure greater cleanliness. “A clean urban environment naturally benefits not only the residents but also the local businesses and their customers,” explains Agostini, who has already initiated actions to beautify the cityscape together with the Völklinger Wirtschaftskreis.
