Passersby noticed a visible steam on the Market Square around 21:50. Upon closer inspection, they found that a hydrant had burst in Hassel. The hydrant was set up for the Christmas market. Uncontrolled water was flowing out of the hydrant. Due to the strong frost, the water outflow caused a mirror-like road surface in the area of the Market Square and parts of Lindenstraße.
The passersby alerted firefighters at the fire station who were there for their weekly drill. Two firefighters braved the water fountain and quickly shut off the water supply with a hydrant key. Meanwhile, the fire department secured the slippery hazardous area. Afterwards, the municipal works department spread the area extensively.
The police and city utilities also provided support during the operation.
