Passersby reported noticeable steam on the Market Square around 21:50. Upon closer inspection, they found that a hydrant stock had burst. The hydrant was set up for the Christmas market supply. Uncontrolled water was flowing out of the hydrant. Due to the strong frost, the water outlet caused a mirror-smooth road surface in the area of the Market Square and in parts of Lindenstraße.
The passersby alerted the firefighters at the equipment house, who were there after their weekly drill.
Two firefighters ventured into the water fountain and quickly turned off the water supply with a hydrant key. Meanwhile, the fire department secured the mirror-smooth hazardous area. Afterwards, the municipal works yard spread the area extensively.
The police and the city utilities supported the operation.
