Passersby reported noticeable steam on the town square around 21:50. Upon closer inspection, they found that a hydrant stand had burst. The hydrant was set up for the Christmas market on the town square. Uncontrolled water was spraying out from the hydrant. Due to the strong frost, the water spray caused a mirror-like road surface in the area of the town square and parts of Lindenstraße.
The passersby alerted the firefighters at the fire station, who were there for their weekly drill.
Two firefighters ventured into the water fountain and quickly turned off the water supply with a hydrant key. Meanwhile, the fire department secured the slippery hazardous area. Afterwards, the municipal works yard spread the area extensively.
The police and city utilities also provided support during the operation.
