Passersby reported noticeable steam on the Market Square around 21:50. Upon closer inspection, they found that a hydrant had burst. The hydrant was set up for the Christmas market on the square. Uncontrolled water was spraying from the hydrant. Due to the strong frost, the water outlet caused a mirror-like road surface in the area of the Market Square and parts of Lindenstraße.
The passersby alerted firefighters at the equipment house, who were there after their weekly drill.
Two firefighters ventured into the water fountain and quickly turned off the water supply with a hydrant key. Meanwhile, the fire department secured the slippery hazardous area. Afterwards, the municipal works department spread the area extensively.
The police and city utilities provided support during the operation.
