On this occasion, a major alarm was triggered for the hazardous materials unit of the fire department due to a hazardous substance leak. Initial measurements were positive and showed an increased level of gas contamination. A water sample was taken by the fire department and is currently being analyzed by the State Office for Environmental Protection. The substance that leaked from three construction pits of sewage pipes is unclear and subject to investigation. Six workers were taken to the university hospital for observation. About 80 personnel from the fire department, police, and German Red Cross emergency services, as well as representatives from the city of Bexbach and the State Office for Environmental Protection, were involved in the operation.
