The Republic of Croatia, as a member of the European Union, NATO, and the OSCE, is a close ally of the Federal Republic of Germany. Accordingly, the state government places great importance on good exchange with Croatia. After the official photo session and the signing of the Saarland guestbook, a discussion took place on, among other topics, the war in Ukraine, the energy crisis, and the economic as well as cultural relations between Saarland and Croatia.
Compared to the previous year, the Saar economy was able to increase its exports to Croatia by 36.08 percent in 2021. Imports from Croatia also rose by 11.09 percent compared to the previous year. The Croatian market is also of interest to the Saar economy. For example, INTIS Engineering GmbH in Überherrn belongs to a Croatian parent company. Hager, Villeroy & Boch, and ten other Saarland companies now have production sites in Croatia. This successful bilateral cooperation is not only limited to economic aspects but also extends to education and science. The University of Zagreb is a partner university of htw saar. The University of Saarland cooperates with the Josip-Juraj-Strossmayer University Osijek, the University of Rijeka, the University of Split, and the University of Zagreb.
Since January 2020, Gordan Bakota has been the Ambassador of the Republic of Croatia to the Federal Republic of Germany. Previously, the law graduate served as Ambassador to the Republic of Serbia.
