Germany and Portugal maintain a friendly and trusting relationship. There is strong agreement on foreign and security policy issues as well as European policy. Additionally, topics such as economic relations and cultural exchange between the two countries were subjects of the discussion.
Some Saarland companies are already collaborating with Portuguese firms in manufacturing and distribution. The next cooperation, Saarland’s participation in the Web Summit, a leading tech conference in Lisbon, is planned for November. Currently, the Saarland economy exports goods and services worth 67.1 million euros to Portugal. The Portuguese telecommunications company Geodesia also has a strong location in Saarland. However, the successful Saarland-Portuguese collaboration is not limited to the economy. Excellent partnerships also exist in the fields of education and research. For example, Saarland University is a partner university of the University of Coimbra. Hernán Leandro Amado has been the Consul General of the Republic of Portugal in Stuttgart since June 11, 2021, responsible for the states of Hesse, Baden-Württemberg, Rhineland-Palatinate, and Saarland. Previously, the political science graduate worked as an advisor in the Secretariat of State for Foreign Affairs and Cooperation of Portugal.
