In the first three weeks since the start of delivery, a total of around 1600 gigawatt hours of natural gas have flowed from France to Germany. This is according to data published online by the Federal Network Agency.
Oliver Luksic, state chairman of the FDP Saar and coordinator of the federal government for logistics, explains: "It is of great importance for energy security in Germany that the Saarland coal power plants are supplied on a priority basis, allowing electricity to be exported. Germany is now also receiving gas from France via the only connection point between the two countries at Gersheim-Medelsheim in Saarland. Since the only pipeline between the two countries was originally intended solely for delivering gas from Germany to France and not the other way around, adjustments had to be made first. In view of the halt of Russian gas supplies to Europe, this is a key contribution within the framework of European solidarity for energy security, with Saarland playing an important role here."
