The so-called dark season has begun, and the days are noticeably getting shorter. Especially in road traffic, everyone must once again adjust to the changed lighting conditions. The motto is "See and be seen." As part of the state government's traffic safety program – "Safe mobility together" – the Saarland Minister for Mobility, Petra Berg, together with the Saarland Motor Vehicle Association and the German Traffic Watch, therefore calls on the people of Saarland to prepare for the changed lighting conditions in road traffic by taking advantage of the free light test.
Nearly all relevant information is gathered by the eye while driving. In poor visibility conditions such as rain, fog, snowfall, or at night, 90 percent of respondents involved in traffic accidents stated that they did not see the other party involved, while in daylight it was only 19 percent.
„Intact lights on the car are a basic requirement for safe participation in road traffic. Analyses from recent years show that unfortunately still too many young people are on the road with faulty lighting. In the Saarland alone, the defect rate of broken or incorrectly adjusted lighting on passenger cars was around 20 percent,“ reminds Minister Berg.
Since 1956, drivers across Germany have had the opportunity to have their car's lighting checked. During the Light Test, participating automotive workshops inspect the vehicle's lighting for proper function and correct adjustment, and immediately fix minor defects free of charge. The test is conducted in October by around 500 master workshops of the automotive guilds in Saarland. More information at: www.licht-test.de
