Regional Association Director Peter Gillo, together with Minister of Education Christine Streichert-Clivot, welcomed students from the Ludwig Gymnasium in Saarbrücken, Poland, and Nepal at the Saarbrücken Castle. There, the young people presented their first trinational student meeting on the topic of sustainable lifestyle and nutrition. The schools in Saarbrücken, the Polish city of Rzeszów, and the Nepali city of Chitwan are connected through a joint school garden partnership. The goal is to raise interdisciplinary awareness among children and adolescents about sustainable development.
In the past school year, the participants of the three project groups got to know each other via an online platform and video conferences. Local seeds were exchanged among them, recipes were cooked together, and ideas for sustainable nutrition and lifestyles were discussed. The Ludwigsgymnasium then organized, in cooperation with the ecological school camp Spohns Haus in Gersheim and the German-Polish Youth Office, an international meeting of the students which took place recently. The program included joint visits to various sustainable businesses and projects in the Saarbrücken region as well as a trip to the European Parliament.
The school garden at Ludwigsgymnasium was opened in June 2019. The regional association supported the implementation of the project with a total of 10,000 euros. On just under 400 square meters, a school garden was created with wild fruit bushes, fruit trees, berry bushes, and raised beds. It is supervised by the cross-grade school garden working group under the direction of Beate Garmer. The school garden is open as a learning space to all classes and subjects.
