Saarland's Minister of Mobility, Petra Berg, welcomes the new direct ICE connection from Saarbrücken to Munich starting with the timetable change in December 2022. The Bavarian state capital can now be reached daily from Saarbrücken within four and a half hours.
The outbound journey starts at 8:27 AM in Saarbrücken. Boarding is possible at 8:49 AM in Homburg. Munich is reached at 12:56 PM. In Munich, there is, among other connections, a RailJet of the ÖBB heading towards Budapest.
The return trip to Saarland departs from Munich at 3:04 PM. Here too, a transfer from the ÖBB RailJet coming from Budapest is possible. The ICE arrives in Saarbrücken at 7:20 PM. Homburg is already reached at 6:54 PM.
However, this improvement cannot overlook the announced disruption of the ICE direct connection to Berlin by Deutsche Bahn, which will be necessary between April and December 2023 due to construction work between Fulda and Kassel. Instead, an ICE replacement connection to Dresden will be established, before a fast ICE direct connection to Berlin will be available again with the next timetable change in December 2023.
Minister Berg: "Deutsche Bahn must do its part to ensure the success of the transport transition. This also includes a consistent expansion of long-distance transport services; new long-distance connections are needed, such as a connection of Saarbrücken to the planned direct link from Berlin to Paris. But an expansion of long-distance connections towards Munich as well as towards Düsseldorf is also absolutely necessary."
