As a guest theater performance, the comedy Avanti! Avanti! by Samuel Taylor will be performed on the upcoming Wednesday, October 5, 2022, at 7 pm in the Saalbau Cultural Center under the direction of Thomas Rohmer. The focus is on summer, sun, Italy, a lot of music, and a fabulous comedy. The lead roles are played by Stefanie Hertel and Stuart Sumner.
About the content of the play:
Alexander Claiborne, called Sandy, receives terrible news. His father died in a car accident one day in May in Italy. Sandy sets off with his wife Diana for the Eternal City to recover his father's mortal remains and to take care of the formalities. But this turns out to be a difficult task, as the southern European clocks and bureaucratic systems run unusually for the American. Diana gives up in frustration after a week. Sandy receives help from Baldo, a shrewd, lively, and temperamental Italian, who is not only interested in Sandy’s organizational problems but quickly becomes very interested in Sandy as a man. However, Sandy is much more fascinated by the pretty Englishwoman and actress Alison Ames. An unfortunate coincidence brings the two seekers together, as Alison’s mother was driving with Sandy’s father when the accident occurred.
The joint search for the deceased parents quickly takes on more carefree moments under the leadership of the bon vivant Baldo, and as a result, Sandy and Alison allow themselves to be swept up in springtime feelings. This not only brings the two closer to each other but also to the life stories of their parents. Alison tells Sandy that her mother had an affair with his father for years, whom Sandy had previously believed to be a faithful family man. For Sandy and Alison, this story seems to be unfolding anew. But then, unexpectedly, Sandy's wife Diana reappears. Is the dolce vita for Sandy and Alison now over?
Samuel Taylor takes us in the romantic comedy to a lively, turbulent, and colorfully portrayed Rome that holds plenty of surprises for Sandy and Alison. Filmed by Billy Wilder, "Avanti Avanti" starring Jack Lemmon and Juliet Mills became a worldwide success.
