Starting from September 27, 2022, the Saarland vaccination centers are expected to also use the BionTech vaccine adapted to the BA.4/BA.5 subvariant. The corresponding approval was granted by the European Medicines Agency (EMA) a few days ago.
“The newly adapted vaccines, according to initial findings, are particularly effective against the currently dominant virus variants. This makes them an important protection for the upcoming autumn season. Therefore, I appeal to all Saarlanders to take advantage of the numerous booster vaccination offers available at vaccination centers and medical practices,” said Health Minister Dr. Magnus Jung.
The newly adapted vaccine was developed by the manufacturer BionTech/Pfizer. It is initially available exclusively for booster vaccinations. Primary immunizations will continue to be based on the original vaccines from the manufacturers Moderna and BionTech.
Against the background of the change in the basic immunization status from October 1, 2022, the first booster will gain special importance. From this date, individuals are considered fully vaccinated if three immunological events (infection or vaccination) have occurred. The Standing Committee on Vaccination (STIKO) recommends the first booster vaccination to all persons aged 12 and over, whose second vaccination was generally six months ago.
A second booster vaccination is only recommended for certain groups of people.
To avoid longer waiting times, appointments can be booked via the portal www.impfen.saarland.de. In addition, the opening hours of the vaccination centers as well as further informational materials about the Corona vaccination are available there. The “Corona and Vaccination Hotline of Saarland” (0681 501 4422 and 0800 9991599) is also available for questions and booking requests.
