Employees of the construction depot drove there on the same day and had to dismantle the wayside cross. "The vandals tried to tear off the copper sheet roof. Apparently, they did not succeed, but it is severely bent. Much worse, however, is that the cross was sawed just above the ground," explains Christoph Anstadt, the head of the construction depot, about the damage.
The crucifix was deliberately damaged already in 1983 and 2018
This is not the first time vandals have been at work here. The cross fell victim to blind acts of destruction back in August 1983 and May 2018. The last time in 2018, the wooden cross had to be extensively repaired and restored. At that time, it had even been broken off with considerable force, so the main beam had to be reinforced with dowels and fitted with a wooden shoe. The restoration took 40 hours of work and the costs amounted to around 2,200 euros.
"This is a particularly nasty form of vandalism that I cannot understand in any way. I am certain that citizens who pause by this cross during their walks also feel confusion and anger about it," clarifies Mayor Dr. Ulli Meyer. Local head Irene Kaiser is also shocked and calls for assistance: "Please contact the city administration if you have noticed anything unusual in this context!"
The cross was donated by Helmut Georg Uhl and jointly erected by many helpers in June 1978 on the initiative of the CDU local council faction. A small flower bed was also created, and a bench invites you to linger.
