The Benedictine Abbey in Tholey, the oldest monastery on German soil, recently known above all for the choir windows designed by Gerhard Richter in the freshly renovated early Gothic abbey church, is exhibiting the religious imagery in the work of the important Saarland painter Albert Weisgerber until October 9, 2022. The works on display come from the Albert Weisgerber Collection in St. Ingbert.
With the small but exquisite special exhibition of Weisgerber's wonderful late works, who, if he had not died so early in the First World War, would likely have become one of the most important artists of the 20th century, the abbey has made its former chapter hall accessible to the interested public as a museum space.
The exhibition in the chapter hall is accessible via the entrance to and through the abbey church. For the duration of the last six weeks, the abbey has decided to switch from the fixed admission fee of €3 or €5 to a pay-what-you-want model / suggested price. Father Wendelinus commented: “Although the special exhibition was well received by interested visitors, it nevertheless became apparent that some visitors to the abbey church were deterred by the fixed admission prices on site. As a result, some visitors missed the special exhibition, which is a bit of a shame given the dignified and high-quality presentation.” “However, this now ensures that everyone still has the opportunity to pay as admission what the visit to the abbey and the special exhibition is worth to them personally,” summarizes Abbot Mauritius on the motivation of the convent.
