On Saturday, 10.09.2022, at 00:06, a traffic accident occurred on Provinzialstraße in Losheim am See (Bachem), in which the driver of a VW Golf crossed into the oncoming lane and collided with a Dacia parked at the roadside. The owner of the parked vehicle noticed the accident and called the police while the male driver of the accident vehicle got out of his car. While the officers from the Nordsaarland police station were en route to the accident scene, the driver of the accident was picked up by another car that had just arrived at the scene and left without permission, as his identity could not yet be verified. Only because witnesses were able to correctly read the license plate of the car that picked up the driver was the police able to locate the vehicle at the registered address. However, at the property in Losheim am See, the officers were not granted access despite obvious presence of people. By order of the public prosecutor's office, a search of the premises was therefore conducted, which was entered through an unlocked basement door. The search led to the discovery of a male person who matched the description previously given by the accident witnesses.
The suspected perpetrator of the accident, who denied committing the act, had a blood sample taken by a doctor called to the scene due to the suspicion that he might have been under the influence of alcohol or narcotics.
The defendant's car was secured for the purpose of conducting a trace search. The same was done with the clothing the defendant was wearing at the time of the accident. The victim's car also had to be towed away as it was no longer drivable. The property damage is estimated at approximately EUR 10,000.00.
Officers from the police inspectorates Nordsaarland and Merzig, as well as the dog unit, were involved in the operations.
