In his opening speech at the St. Ingbert Pfanne, Mayor Dr. Ulli Meyer spoke about the freedom of art.
On the one hand, he recalled the scandal involving an anti-Semitic banner at the documenta in Kassel, where further artworks were subsequently identified as anti-Semitic. "Incitement of the people and anti-Semitism have no place in our country, whether in images, words, or on stage," the mayor emphasized in his speech.
The recent discussion about racism and so-called "cultural appropriation" in connection with the works of Karl May also left many people with questions. Due to criticism from some individuals, the release of two new "Winnetou books" was halted. Karl May, born in the twin town of Radebeul, wrote the world-famous books from his imagination; in reality, he had never been to the USA.
"Culture thrives on artists developing and portraying imagination, which therefore does not have to reflect reality. This is the very core of creative work and action! Art does not always have to please everyone. Artistic freedom is not a gift from the state or society! It is guaranteed by our Basic Law!", stated Mayor Dr. Ulli Meyer on the opening night of the cabaret festival.
