Depending on the viewer's perspective, a monument can be a testament to past times, a keepsake, a memorial, a source of inspiration, a work of art, a lost place, and much more. Reason enough to take a closer look at the monuments in our region once a year.
In cooperation with the State Office for the Preservation of Monuments, the districts, municipalities, and private initiatives, the Open Monument Day will take place in Saarland on Sunday, September 11, 2022. More than 20 historic monuments have been selected and will open their doors to citizens, visitors, tourists, and those interested – young and old.
St. Ingbert is also participating in the event. Two exciting monuments will be on display. On the one hand, the Catholic Parish Church of St. Hildegard will be open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. The remarkable architecture of the church building from 1928/29 will be explained in guided tours at 11:30 a.m. and 2 p.m., each lasting 45 minutes. After the tours, Christian von Blohn will surprise visitors with an organ performance. At 5 p.m., there will also be a bell concert.
On the other hand, the Old Cotton Spinning Mill opens its doors from 1:45 PM to 5 PM. This multi-story industrial building from 1885 is an architecturally significant ensemble. After various uses and long-term considerations, a new usage concept is now in place, for which the project management contract has already been awarded: The old factory is being converted into a modern city administration and the Albert Weisgerber Museum. Guided tours of about one hour take place at 2 PM and 3 PM (please bring sturdy footwear). Between 3 PM and 5 PM, the St. Ingbert company abat+ presents a virtual tour of the planned building using VR glasses. For more information about visiting the Old Cotton Spinning Mill, please contact Margret Welsch, City of St. Ingbert, 06894/13-337, mwelsch@st-ingbert.de
Both sites are worth a visit! Further information can be found at www.denkmal.saarland.de and on the flyer available at public locations.
