The massive increase in energy prices is posing ever greater challenges for companies in Saarland. A tenfold rise in previous prices is not uncommon. All sectors are affected – from bakery businesses to manufacturing industries to gastronomy. Some companies are already seriously considering filing for insolvency as a precautionary measure to avoid accusations of delaying the process. "A dramatic situation, ultimately putting thousands of jobs and livelihoods at risk," said Angelika Hießerich-Peter, deputy state chairwoman of the FDP Saar. Economic Minister Barke urgently needs to form a crisis team to support the affected companies and work together with them to develop solutions. The expansion of renewable energies, which has so far only progressed very cautiously in Saarland, often fails due to regulations and insufficient support from the Saarland state government. A notable example is the promotion demanded by the farmers' association for grid connection costs for solar and biogas plants on farms. Much potential is lost here that could contribute to energy security. A baseload-capable energy supply that consistently serves all consumers, from private households to industry, is thus not feasible, but every small building block counts. "The SPD Saar should be honest and clarify that Saarland will continue to rely on electricity supplies from the Cattenom nuclear power plant in France in the future," Hießerich-Peter continued. "It does not help to repeatedly push for the phasing out of nuclear power stations without naming a practical alternative. Only with a stable and affordable energy supply can Saarland companies survive this severe crisis."
