According to a study by Ernst & Young, 17% of Saarland municipalities increased their rates for property tax B last year – and looking back to 2016, as many as
77% of towns and municipalities have raised property tax B. This means that Saarland now has the third-highest rates among the federal states with large areas nationwide. As a structurally weak
region, Saarland loses attractiveness as a place to live due to high costs – tenants ultimately pay these tax increases through additional costs. It is now up to the state government
to introduce a cap on the burden of property tax: it should ensure that property tax does not continue to rise and that living in Saarland remains affordable in the future. In the long term, a simple, unbureaucratic, and efficient registry for building gaps and potential areas must be introduced to enable as many people as possible to live in Saarland in the future.
