As early as 2013, the municipality of Gersheim began gradually converting its street lighting to energy-saving LED bulbs. Additional street sections will also be upgraded in 2022.
Low energy consumption and reduced heat generation: With an LED lamp, a tremendous amount of energy can be saved compared to a conventional incandescent bulb. Up to 50% less energy is consumed with an LED bulb to produce the same brightness as with an incandescent lamp. However, the municipality of Gersheim decided as early as 2013 to switch its street lighting to LED not only for cost reasons.
In four phases, the conversion to LED lights took place in 2013 in the districts of Medelsheim, Seyweiler, Peppenkum, and Utweiler; in 2015 in Rubenheim, Herbitzheim, Walsheim; in 2016 in Reinheim, Bliesdalheim, Niedergailbach; and in 2018 in Gersheim (and part of Seyweiler).
From 2021 to 2022, the conversion to energy-saving lighting is now also taking place in the side streets of Medelsheim and Peppenkum.
Pfalzwerke Netz AG is carrying out the work to convert the street lighting to energy-saving LED lights. The costs for replacing the lights in Medelsheim and Peppenkum amount to approximately €36,155.00. By switching to LED, electricity consumption and thus electricity costs can be reduced by up to 50%.
The conversion of street lighting in Medelsheim and Peppenkum to energy-saving lights is supported by federal funding from the Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety through the National Climate Protection Initiative with €12,648.00.
Since 2008, the Federal Ministry has initiated and supported numerous projects through the National Climate Protection Initiative that contribute to reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Its programs and projects cover a wide range of climate protection activities: from the development of long-term strategies to concrete assistance and investment support measures. The National Climate Protection Initiative helps anchor climate protection at the local level. It benefits consumers as well as businesses, municipalities, and educational institutions.
