Neunkirchen. The drivers of two small cars were critically injured in a traffic accident on the Neunkirchen Westspange early Saturday evening, August 13. Around 6 p.m., the Neunkirchen Volunteer Fire Department, together with emergency medical services and police forces, rushed to the accident site near the junction with federal highway B41 to assist the accident victims.
Just a few hundred meters from the junction of the Westspange with federal highway B41, a silver VW Polo and a yellow VW Fox collided head-on on Saturday evening. Due to the severe impact, the two drivers – a 24-year-old and a 71-year-old man – sustained life-threatening injuries. Several first responders, including an employee of the Völklingen rescue station of the German Red Cross (DRK), stopped immediately after the accident. They called emergency services, rescued the two accident victims who were not trapped from their destroyed vehicles, and provided first aid.
After the emergency call from the dedicated first responders, the control center triggered an alarm at 5:51 PM for the Neunkirchen volunteer fire department as well as a large contingent of emergency medical services. In addition to the fire districts Neunkirchen city center and Wiebelskirchen, an emergency doctor and ambulances from the fire department and the German Red Cross set off to the accident site. From Saarbrücken, the ADAC rescue helicopter "Christoph 16" flew in and brought another emergency doctor to the scene.
Since, contrary to the initial report, no more injured persons were trapped in the accident wrecks, the forces from the Wiebelskirchen fire district were able to abort their mission. The firefighters from Neunkirchen city center supported the emergency services in providing medical care to the two seriously injured men and secured the accident site. After medical treatment on site, the two injured were transported by ambulance to nearby hospitals for further treatment. At the same time, the fire department ensured fire protection due to the numerous operating materials leaking from the accident wrecks and began to remove spilled oils and fuels.
The fire department's operation continued until the completion of the accident investigation by an expert and the subsequent recovery of the two wrecks by a towing company around 9 p.m. Until then, the police completely closed the Westspange in the area of the accident to traffic. In addition to 13 firefighters from Neunkirchen city center, Neunkirchen fire chief and district fire inspector Michael Sieslack were also involved in the operation.
