Hoffeld calls for support for citizens and clubs
Mayor of Merzig sends letter to Minister-President Rehlinger
After the corona pandemic significantly influenced people’s daily lives for more than two years and the worst now seems to be over, the next challenge is approaching. The Ukraine war, which has been ongoing since the end of February, is increasingly impacting the life of every individual. This has already become apparent to everyone through delivery difficulties and rising prices in many areas of life. Looking ahead to the coming winter, gas and electricity shortages now threaten – the term “energy crisis” is currently present in the media every day.
Against this background, the mayor of Merzig, Marcus Hoffeld, has sent a letter to Prime Minister Anke Rehlinger, requesting support for the citizens and clubs in light of the rising costs. “Our municipal utilities Merzig have already recommended increasing the installments for gas customers; I fully support this recommendation as there is no alternative, fully aware that this will lead to further rising expenses and living costs for all households,” writes Hoffeld, pointing out that this step affects every single citizen as well as our clubs, which have also suffered greatly in recent months due to the corona pandemic.
Hoffeld continued: "Last week, a 'round table summit' was called for with regard to the stability of the municipal utilities. In this context, I especially ask, with regard to the citizens as well as our clubs, all of which are struggling with rising costs, that social organizations as well as representatives of sports and cultural associations also participate in such a 'round table.'"
Of course, every individual is also called upon to contribute to energy savings – all citizens, all clubs, and of course the municipalities – so that together this challenge can be successfully mastered. Therefore, the Merzig city administration has formed a working group that is creating an action plan to save energy sustainably. “This includes, among other things, the room temperature in municipal buildings, the external use of municipal sports halls or community centers during the winter months, lighting including street lighting, and much more,” explains the Mayor of Merzig. The district town of Merzig will provide information in the coming days about the results of the working group and the impacts.
