The Omicron variant BA.5 is currently dominating the pandemic situation and presents us with particular challenges for the autumn. This was stated by Federal Health Minister Prof. Karl Lauterbach in his Bundestag speech on the draft law for stronger protection of the population against COVID-19. Measures are now being taken to ensure good preparedness for the coming autumn.
The best protection – especially against severe illness – remains with the vaccinated: older people who have received the second booster vaccination rarely become seriously ill. A vaccination campaign primarily targeting those over 60 is therefore a key element of the Federal Ministry of Health’s 7-point plan for the autumn. This is complemented by, among other things, targeted testing, faster use of medications, and a pandemic radar for improved data foundation.
With the Third Ordinance amending the Coronavirus Test Ordinance, testing capacities have been used even more selectively since June 30, 2022. Citizens still have a right to free citizen tests under certain conditions. In case of risk exposure (e.g., indoor events, concerts, theater, weddings, etc.), people who want to get tested contribute 3 euros to the citizen tests.

Through the year with AHA+A+L
The coronavirus pandemic is not over. We can protect ourselves with the AHA+A+L formula: keep distance, pay attention to hygiene, and – where everyday life gets crowded – wear a mask. Additionally, we should use the Corona-Warn-App in daily life and ventilate indoor spaces regularly.
