The Saarland member of the Bundestag Oliver Luksic (FDP) provides information about the funding program to prevent hazards during prolonged heat:
"Hot temperatures are part of summer; however, due to their increasing frequency, municipalities and urban planning must adapt. In city centers, high temperatures can become dangerous for some people.
The federal government has launched a funding program for the “Adaptation of Urban Spaces to Climate Change,” which is specifically designed to address heat exchange in urban areas. With this funding program, parks and green spaces in Saarland can be made climate-change resilient. As a result, municipalities in Saarland can make a significant contribution to climate-friendly urban development and the modernization of green-blue infrastructure to make upcoming heat waves more bearable. The funding is an opportunity to adapt the local microclimate. The project call for the coming year is already underway. The federal government covers 90% of the total costs, thus easing the burden on the chamber of municipalities.”
