The energy crisis is also affecting swimming pools. Against this backdrop, many pools have already lowered the water temperature to save on energy costs. According to estimates by the German Society for Bathing (DGfdB), 50 – 60% of indoor pools have already reduced their water temperature by up to 2 °C.
“Since June 23, 2022, the second alarm level of the emergency gas plan has been in effect in Germany – due to the war in Ukraine,” said Daniel Barth, Managing Director of Stadtwerke Merzig. “If the third alarm level is reached, the Federal Network Agency could decide to completely disconnect facilities such as swimming pools, which are not part of the critical infrastructure,” Barth continued.
“For this reason, Merziger Bäder GmbH has compiled and already implemented an action plan,” explains Martin Siemon, the managing director of Merziger Bäder GmbH. “Like many other pools, we also had to lower the pool water temperature by one degree, as this offers the greatest potential for savings. Especially during the summer months, visitors will hardly notice this measure,” Siemon explains and hopes that the energy market situation has eased by the cold season.
